Freedom Movement, Jail and Netagiri Born on May 19, 1913, in an ordinary family of Anantapuram in Andhra Pradesh, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was a leader of leadership since childhood. During his college days, when Sanjeev Neelam Reddy was 18 years old, he was so impressed with Mahatma Gandhi that he left his studies and jumped into the movement against the British. Sanjeev was caught by the British and also imprisoned. When he came out, he emerged as a leader and took membership in the Congress.
Neelam Sanjiva Reddy emerged as a powerful after resigning and was made a minister for the first time in the government of Kumaraswamy Raja in Andhra Pradesh. He was likewise President of the State Congress. According to media reports, in the meantime, when his son died in a road accident, he became disheartened and resigned to leave politics. Sanjeev, who was a veteran leader, was somehow convinced by the Congress’s high command. With this, he emerged as even more powerful in the party.
Sanjiva Reddy, who became the first CM of Andhra and the youngest Chief Minister of the country, became the biggest leader of the Congress in Andhra Pradesh, he was elected the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh formed in the year 1956. He also achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest Chief Minister of the state. When Sanjeev became CM for the first time, his age was only 43 years. In this way, he became the first leader to create the record of the youngest CM of the country.
When nominated for the post of President, there was a ‘ruckus’ Sanjiva Reddy, who was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh twice, became a minister in the central government several times. He was also made the speaker of Lok Sabha in 1967. According to media reports, Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister in 1969. The presidency became vacant after the sudden death of President Zakir Hussain. Meanwhile, Indira Gandhi nominated Babu Jagjivan Ram for the President of the Congress Parliamentary Board, while the rest of the leaders put forward the name of Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. This incident paved the way for a split in the Congress.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee, who was defeated by VV Giri in the presidential election, has told in an interview the developments during the presidential post in 1969. According to him, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy got 6 votes out of 10 votes of the leaders of the National Working Committee and became the President of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Along with this, he also became the presidential candidate. The then Vice President VV Giri, who aspired to become the President, got angry. He ran as an independent for the presidency. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi supported VV Giri. Naleem Sanjiva Reddy lost in this election and VV Giri became the President. Disappointed by the victory of VV Giri in the presidential election and becoming the youngest President of the country and his defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, Sanjiva Reddy distanced himself from politics and started farming. In 1975, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy returned to politics on the persuasion of Jai Prakash Narayan and won the 6th Lok Sabha elections by a huge margin. After this Sanjiva Reddy was appointed Speaker of Lok Sabha in 1977. Two years later, he was unanimously elected president unopposed. Sanjeev was elected the 6th President of the country at the age of 64. Sanjiva Reddy also got the distinction of being the youngest President.
